Asus ZenFone 5 Review

Smartphones launching here and there!

Superphone fans are all excited to have been seeing a wider range of products according to their choices of functionality, and overall specifications. Asus phones has been one of the most innovative Android device manufactures over the past few years with their PadFone and Fonepad releases. But despite the Zenfones being somehow ordinary to Asus standards, its units are very much anticipated by the public.

Today, let’s have a look at this new Asus phone with this Asus ZenFone 5 review!

Comparison Review between ZenFones

ZenFone 5 is like the middle of range between ZenFone 4 and ZenFone 6 – ZenFone 4 being the smallest, cheapest and least powerful of the three, while ZenFone 6 has the best camera and fastest performance. All three models are powered by Atom systems instead of the usual Qualcomm Snapdragon chips we have been familiar with. It’s very rare you get to see an Intel inside logo at the back of the smartphone, isn’t it?

Asus ZenFone 5 Design

Asus ZenFone 5 Colors is available in red, purple, white and black. On the first look, ZenFone 5’s design is very traditional, but if you look at little deeper, there’s a lot to like. The textured plastic underneath the capacitive buttons has a circular pattern to it so the light shines off it in nice patterns. Asus says the back feels like ceramic. It doesn’t. It feels like what it is: fairly basic plastic. The biggest problem with the back is how prone to fingerprints it is. Asus has positioned the buttons and ports on functional locations on the ZenFone 5 with power and volume controls on the right side, microUSB on the bottom and a standard headphone jack on top.

Asus has made the ZenFone 5 a great device for watching video and playing games. The screen is bright and sharp and nicely responsive. The buttons, for me, are a spaced too far apart and they are not backlit – a sign that this is a budget phone. Those buttons, however, are in correct order for an Android phone. It is safe to say that the bezels to the sides of the screen are large with a very bright and shart five-inch 1920 x 1080 pixel screen – same as other Asus five-inch screened phones. The cheaper ZenFone 4 doesn’t have the light sensor and therefore no auto-brightness.

Asus ZenFone 5 Camera

There is a 2MP front facing camera, proximity sensor, light sensor and notification LED above the screen. The 8MP camera with LED flash is mounted above the Asus logo with a wide speaker grille beneath that Intel Inside logo.

Asus ZenFone 5 Performance

Asus ZenFone 5 supports Intel’s HyperThreading technology that allows the operating system to see each physical core as two processing core which further improves performance so multitasking is excellent as it also has a full 2GB of RAM. The 16GB of internal storage is generous for a device at this end of the market and the microSD card expansion means there is plenty of room for all your media.

Priced at around PHP 11,600, this phone is an excellent value considering what you get. Its update supports Android 4.4 Kitkat and Asus is not known for rapid software updates. The 4G model does run Kitkat though and hopefully Asus will get all ZenFone 5’s up to date very soon.

The 2110mAh battery is non-removable. Some review says that there are only few compromises on its power availability. There is also a microSD card expansion slot and the SIM slot. Here in the Philippines and all countries except in the UK, it comes with a dual SIM capability. The Intel Atom chip is a Z2560, which is a dual-core 1.6Ghz unit.
